How many reporters does the New York Times have?
JournalistLabs, 2026-11-02
We hold 2,168 editorial staff at The New York Times. 632 of them have a reporter title and 169 a correspondent title, 801 together. Editors outnumber both: 1,144 of the 2,168 rows, 52.8%.
The Times itself was reported at 1,700 journalists in March 2023, a figure attributed to deputy managing editor Sam Dolnick on its Wikipedia page. Our 801 reporters and correspondents are 47% of that number. Our rows are named people with a Times job title, not a payroll count, so treat both numbers as estimates.

That is 1.81 editors per reporter. We wrote about that ratio, and how the BBC runs the other way, in a September post.
Where the reporters are
470 of the 632 reporters are based in the US, 285 of them in New York, 37 in Washington, DC and 32 in California. The other 162 sit outside the US, 35 of them in Britain.
The Times has 169 correspondents on file. 104 are in the US and 65 are spread over 29 other countries. Counting reporters and correspondents together, 227 of the 801 are based outside the US.
The commonest title is plain "Reporter", on 197 of the 632 rows. Next come "Journalist" (75), "Video Journalist" (25) and "Photojournalist" (24).
Other US newsrooms
The Times has more editorial rows than any other US outlet in our base, but not the most reporters. Bloomberg has 839 and The Wall Street Journal 676.

We left The Washington Post out. We hold 168 rows for it and only 3 carry a reporter title, which says more about our coverage of the Post than about the Post.
How we counted
The base is the 127,602 editorial rows in JournalistLabs, people data pulled from July to September 2026. A row counts for the Times when its employer is nytco.com or nytimes.com. Role is classified from the job title, so a person titled "Journalist" counts as a reporter and "Correspondent" counts as a correspondent. Location is the person's own country and state.
