What JournalistLabs does
Journalist counts
Counts of reporters and editors by role, beat and country at /journalists/, each with its count date.
Beat lists
One page per beat (26 beats) listing the journalists whose title or profile headline names the beat, biggest newsroom first.
Outlet pages
Newsroom size by outlet and by outlet type at /outlets/.
Research
Reports on how coverage is spread across newsrooms, at /research/, each with a CSV of its rows.
Where the numbers come from
- A vendor company dataset cut to media industries, a hand-listed set of outlets and the Wikidata news-media-organisation subtree form the outlet universe.
- People rows come from a vendor people dataset joined on the outlet's domain. Titles and headlines are text each person wrote on their own professional profile.
- Wikidata's journalists are joined in where an employer is recorded.

How JournalistLabs works
Job titles are matched to roles, beats and seniority by fixed word rules, stated on the method page. A share is published only when its base holds at least 40 rows. Every page carries its count month. Corrections go to hello@journalistlabs.com.
Frequently asked questions
Is JournalistLabs free?
Yes. Every count and list on the site is free to read and to cite with a link to the page it came from.
Why is a journalist I know missing from a beat list?
A person appears on a beat list only when their job title or profile headline names the beat, and only when their outlet is in the outlet universe. The method page lists the word rules.
How do I hear about the next count?
Leave an email address in the form at the foot of any page. It is used only to announce the next count.
