The BBC has almost as many AI jobs as all of journalism has poverty reporters

We went looking for newsroom desks that had fewer people than AI. Poverty was the one that made us check the query twice.

In our base of 127,602 journalists at 8,800 outlets, 6 people have "poverty" or "inequality" in their job title. The BBC alone has 5 people with AI in theirs.

The six poverty reporters

Four of the six work at US public radio or nonprofit local newsrooms. None is at the BBC, The New York Times or any wire service.

The BBC's five AI jobs

Only the first one reports on AI. The other four are jobs that bring AI tools into the BBC's own newsroom. By job title, the BBC has 0 poverty or inequality reporters.

Across all outlets there are 63 AI job titles, about ten for every poverty or inequality reporter. Homelessness does a bit better with 10 titled reporters, all at US local outlets such as the Seattle Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and CalMatters.

What this does and doesn't count

These are job titles, not coverage. Most poverty stories get written by people with titles like "social affairs correspondent" or "economics reporter"; the BBC has 4 social affairs correspondents on file. Only about a quarter of the rows in our base name any beat in the title at all, and our base holds about 72% of the BBC's published staff figure. So the claim is narrow: when a newsroom puts a subject in someone's job title, AI now gets that more often than poverty.

The counts come from the JournalistLabs base pulled in August and September 2026, the job title field only. The AI list is the same 63 rows as in our AI job titles report. The rows, counts and script are in the dataset below.
