Ties are ordered by the outlet's row count. Of the 202 outlets with 100 or more rows, 44 have at least one newsletter title. The Daily Northwestern, the Northwestern University student paper, has the highest share among them, 5 of 108 rows.
What the titles say
All 15 6AM City titles are "Newsletter Editor" or "Senior Newsletter Editor". Ten of them add a city edition after the comma: ATXtoday, NASHtoday, INDYtoday, RALtoday, RICtoday, NOVAtoday, AVLtoday, FTWtoday, WStoday and LALtoday. Each city edition we see has its own newsletter editor.
The New York Times has 9 titles and 9 different strings. They run from "Newsletter Editor" to "Editorial Director of Newsletters", "Deputy Managing Editor, Newsletters", "Optimization Editor, Newsletters" and "Supervising Editor, Newsletters and Programming, Wirecutter". We expected the Times to show a newsletter desk with managers above it, and four of the nine titles are director, managing or supervising roles.
Across the base, "Newsletter Editor" is the commonest string at 71 rows, followed by "Senior Newsletter Editor" at 12. 178 of the 201 rows are classed as editors, 12 as reporters.
The US holds 142 of the 201 rows and the UK 31. India and Australia have 6 each.
What the count misses
We hold 38 6AM City people and 2,168 New York Times people. We do not know either newsroom's full headcount, so the counts are of the people on our rows, not of either staff. The 39.5% is a share of 38 rows and moves a lot with one person added or dropped.
A title match also misses people who write a newsletter under a plain title. A Times reporter who writes a weekly newsletter and is titled "Reporter" is not counted. So 201 is a count of newsletter job titles, not of journalists who write newsletters.
How we counted
The base is the 127,602 editorial rows we publish counts from, people data pulled from July to September 2026. We matched "newsletter" as plain text over the job-title field, case-insensitive, so "Newsletters" counts too. The profile headline is not used. Outlet names follow the site's outlet pages. The dataset has the counts per outlet, role, country and title string; no person-level rows.
